I can tell you this - as can kfoo: Running a board - uness you are a prodigously talented code writer - forces you to rely on very expensive outside expertise; and that, right quick. Ya know how ordinary members can pin a thread on this board? Or start a peanut gallery thread wherein they - ordinary members - have the power of a senior moderator within their thread? Or nominate a post for post of the day?
Yeah - that's not off the shelf. That is unique to THIS board, on all of the interwebs.
That is a very partial look through the window of running a forum. When you come under ddos attack on a regular basis, your service provider will dump you (unless they do not know about the attacks, because you have a fellow with Gorilla Hands on your side).
You may take this as an attempt at dissuasion motivated by fear of competition. But I would remind you that I was pretty regular over on dot org, except whenever one of their mods banned me - and I brought content. In addition, long before we knew dot org wasn't coming back, I was keeping posters abreast. You've never see me badmouth dot org - only praise it or mention it neutrally at worst.
In truth, bringing these issues to your attention is a mitzva - a freaking gift. Ax around - do some googling. Running a board that draws enemies? It's no picnic.
Thanks for the info. I believe what you say. Just doing some preliminary research into it. I write code for a living but it is different.
